Both SMS and push notifications deliver short messages to mobile users. Choosing the wrong channel costs you reach, conversions, or customer trust. Here’s a practical breakdown of when each channel wins.
The Core Difference
Push notifications are delivered through an app or browser. They require your user to have installed your app (or subscribed to browser push) and have not disabled notifications for it. If they uninstall the app or revoke permissions, you can’t reach them.
SMS is delivered to the phone number itself. No app installation required, works on every mobile phone (including basic handsets), and reaches users even when they don’t have your app open — or installed at all.

For a global audience or any situation where you can’t guarantee app installation, SMS has structurally higher reach.
Open Rate and Engagement
SMS messages are opened within 3 minutes on average, with overall read rates above 90%. Push notifications achieve around 50–60% open rates for opted-in users — but since opt-in rates are lower, the effective reach of a push campaign is typically smaller than an SMS campaign to the same base.
Push wins on rich content: images, action buttons, deep links into specific app screens. SMS is plain text only (160 chars per standard part), which forces brevity — often an advantage for conversion-focused messages.

Push notification delivery itself is free from Google/Apple. Cost comes from the platform you use to manage campaigns. For pure per-message cost, push is cheaper at scale. However, SMS reaches users who aren’t in your app — the incremental reach often justifies the cost.
Use Case Breakdown
SMS wins
Time-sensitive transactional alerts — order confirmation, shipping update, delivery window, appointment reminder. These go to customers regardless of whether they have your app installed.

Re-engagement — reaching lapsed users who may have deleted your app. SMS arrives on the phone number, which doesn’t change when users switch devices.
High-value communications — account suspension warnings, payment failures, fraud alerts. Users expect these through a channel they trust, not an in-app notification they might miss.
Global campaigns — reaching customers across markets where app penetration varies. SMS is the common denominator.
Push wins
In-app engagement — nudging users who are likely to open the app anyway: “You have 3 items in your cart”, “New message from Sarah”, “Your weekly report is ready.”
Rich media — displaying a product image alongside a flash sale notification, or adding “View Order” / “Track Package” action buttons.
High-frequency, low-stakes — social notifications (likes, comments, follows) are annoying via SMS but acceptable as push. Users can batch these or mute them per-app.
Personalized in-app journeys — deep-linking directly to a specific product page, chat thread, or checkout flow from the notification itself.
Cost-sensitive at scale — if you’re sending millions of daily notifications to active app users, push is the right call. SMS cost adds up at that volume for low-urgency messages.
The Best Strategy: Use Both
High-performing mobile apps use SMS and push notifications as a tiered system:
- Primary channel: push — reach active users who have the app installed and notifications enabled
- Fallback: SMS — send SMS to users who haven’t opened the push within a defined window, or who have never installed the app
- Always SMS — for OTP, payment failures, and high-urgency account alerts regardless of push status
Most marketing platforms support this pattern via “preferred channel” logic or engagement-based routing.
