The Sender ID is what your recipients see instead of a phone number. Getting it right affects both deliverability and brand recognition.
Types of Sender IDs
Alphanumeric Sender ID
A custom text string up to 11 characters — typically your brand name (e.g. SMSPM, MyStore). Recipients cannot reply, but they see your brand name immediately.
Best for: Marketing messages, notifications, alerts.
Numeric Sender ID
A standard phone number. Recipients can reply, and it is accepted in countries that block alphanumeric senders.
Best for: Two-way communication, markets with restrictions.
Shortcode
A 5-6 digit number, typically shared or dedicated. High throughput, widely supported, but requires carrier approval and comes at higher cost.
Best for: High-volume campaigns, OTPs, regulated industries.
Countries That Require Pre-Registration
Some countries mandate that alphanumeric sender IDs be pre-registered with local carriers before use. Key examples:
- India — TRAI regulations require DLT registration
- United States — Alphanumeric senders are not supported; 10DLC or shortcodes required
- Australia — Sender ID registration via carriers
- Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand — Pre-registration required
SMSPM handles sender ID registration for supported markets. Contact support to initiate the process.
